Psychotherapy is a specialized method of treatment where the communication, interaction and relationship between patient and Psychotherapist are used to help the patient.
Psychotherapy makes one’s problems more understandable, gives one confidence in solving them and restores one’s morale.
Psychotherapy works through a special quality of relationship. The private space offered in therapy provides a safe, reliable and open environment to explore areas that one normally might prefer not to tread, and to seek to deepen understanding of the meaning of one’s experience, behaviour and relationship patterns, thoughts and feelings, desires and disappointments.
It is concerned with helping people work through the complex issues that cause suffering and distress; aims to uncover and address whatever has gotten in the way of emotional maturation and development; encourage a greater sense of autonomy and effectiveness, and inspire a feeling of purpose and meaning.
Psychotherapy is strictly confidential.
Some examples of conditions that Psychotherapy is effective in are:
- Stress, Tension and Anxiety Disorders
- Life Crises
- Phobic and Panic Disordersli>
- Mood Disorders eg: Depression
- Sexual and Relationship Problems
- Eating Habit Disorders eg: Obesity, Bulimia
- Grief Reactions
- Coping with Chronic and/or Life Threatening Illness
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. It is not like an anaesthetic; you do not pass out and you are not unconscious when you are hypnotized.
You do not lose control over your mind or feelings. You do not weaken or surrender your will. In fact your will power may be strengthened with Hypnosis.
When in Hypnosis it is usual to feel relaxed, at ease and enjoy a special peace of mind. Many people comment on a sensation of lightness or floating; a feeling of comfort and security. It is natural, safe and almost everyone can learn to use it and be helped by it. It can be learnt by children and adults, young and old.
Hypnosis can be very usefully and successfully employed in conditions in which anxiety, tension, stress and fears play an important role, such as:
Insomnia; Obesity; Smoking; Asthma; Chronic Pain; Skin Problems; Sexual Difficulties; Burns; Coping with Cancer; Fears and Phobias; Headaches; Nail Biting; Stuttering; Tension Problems; Thumb Sucking; Stress and Anxiety disorders; Gastro-intestinal Disorders.
Hypnosis can also help improve confidence and self-esteem. With Hypnosis a person can learn to improve motivation and desire to do things, to change unwanted habits, and to relate better with themselves and others. Hypnosis can also be used to enhance the benefits of Psychotherapy.
Hypnosis does not work miracles. It is not magic and should never be seen as a cure for all problems. Normally Hypnosis will not provide an instant cure. While many people can be helped with brief treatments requiring a few sessions, some people do require more extensive treatment in which a combination of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (referred to as Hypnotherapy) is often useful.
